Questions To Ask Yourself When Choosing Flooring (Hard Surface or Wall-to-wall Carpet?)

When customers visit our showroom looking for flooring, many customers have no idea what they are looking for. Or, if they do, we typically find that they might know a color they are interested in, or a general description (carpet vs. hard surface) but have no idea what specific type of flooring they might need. Because of this, we have three main questions we always ask them to help narrow down the options, and select the perfect flooring for their space(s). You can use these questions too, as a guide for shopping for new flooring for your space. That being said, please always feel free to visit our Fountain Valley, CA showroom where our team would be more than happy to help you in your search for new flooring, in person. You may also contact us by email or phone, with any questions you have.

The first question we always ask is…

  1. What room or Spaces are you looking to install new flooring in?

It is very helpful for us to know where you are looking to install new flooring. Whether it’s for a residential or commercial property, which room(s) are needing flooring, etc., is all very important in helping us find you the perfect flooring type. For example, different rooms within a home have different levels of foot traffic, different potentials for staining, different levels of use, etc.

As far as a commercial properties go, those typically need very durable flooring, therefore making certain flooring styles/types unrecommended, altogether.

Secondly, we ask…

2. Are you interested in wall-to-wall carpet or hard surface flooring?

When it comes to hard surface flooring, we’re referring to either hardwood, vinyl or laminate—we sell and install all three. While there are certainly several different types and styles of hard surface flooring, determining whether you want hard surface or wall-to-wall carpet (note: this is wall-to-wall carpet and not an area rug) is a very important step.

Generally speaking, hard surface flooring is good for any area with a high amount of foot traffic and high potential for staining/spilling (think bathrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, etc.) We recommend the use of wall-to-wall carpet in areas where comfort, noise reduction and coziness or softness is desired (think bedrooms, kids’ rooms, family rooms, etc.) That being said, it all comes down to personal preference. There are several great options of both wall-to-wall carpet and hard surface flooring, and many times people prefer to mix and match the types throughout their space. We take all of this into account so we make sure to jot down what our customers’ preferences are and for which rooms or spaces.

Thirdly, we ask…

3. Do you have any pets or kids? (Or Do you plan to in the near future?)

If the answer is yes to pets or kids, depending on your answer to question two, we will recommend either an extremely durable, stain-resistant wall-to-wall carpet or a durable/waterproof hard surface option—such as luxury vinyl.

If the answer is no, and you don’t have any pets or kids (and don’t plan to in the near future), you will have more options of wall-to-wall carpet and hard surface flooring to choose from.

That being said, we certainly recognize that just because you don’t have pets or kids, doesn’t mean you don’t want a durable or waterproof flooring option. At this step, we ask all of our child-free and pet-free customers what kind of durability and staining protection they’re looking for. Often times, those without kids/pets are comfortable knowing fewer stains/spills will occur in their home, so they prioritize things like comfort, colors, and price point. Which leads us to our next step…

Budget, Patterns and colors

After our customers answer the three questions above, we have a really good idea of what type of flooring is needed for where. By this point, we’ve taken into account the type of space(s), the level of foot traffic, possible staining and activity within the space, and overall durability and functionality preferences. This allows us to direct our customers to the perfect flooring types for the space(s).

For example, if the customer will be installing wall-to-wall carpet, we have now concluded whether a Nylon, Polypropylene, Polyester, Wool or Acrylic carpet would serve their space best.

For hard surface, we have now determined whether Engineered Wood, LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank), LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile), Laminate or Vinyl flooring, would suit their space best.

Or, if the customer is looking for a couple different options, we have concluded this by now as well.

We now are able to ask our customers what their budget is and from there, comes the fun part! After flooring type(s) and budget are established, we are able to guide our customers in selecting patterns and/or colors that fit their budget and their lifestyle. We like to let our customers guide us by telling us what stands out to them (either good or bad), and if they are needing any assistance, we like to show them our best sellers as sometimes that really helps our customers feel more confident in their decision.

Choosing new flooring can be very overwhelming. We certainly understand this. We hope that these questions helped narrow down your selection in some way.
